Welcome to the official portal of the SWAYAM NPTEL Local Chapter at TPGIT, Vellore. As an initiative by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) provides high-quality, IIT and IISc-curated online certification courses. Our Local Chapter serves as an essential academic bridge, enabling students and faculty members to enrich their technical portfolios, earn academic credits, and gain a competitive edge in the global engineering landscape.

1. Chapter Operations & Enrollment

The TPGIT Local Chapter streamlines the entire learning lifecycle — from course discovery to final certification — through dedicated internal mentorship.

  • Course Selection & Guidance: At the start of every semester, the Local Chapter publishes a curated list of NPTEL courses aligned with the current department syllabi and industry demands.
  • Single-Window Registration: Students must select "Thanthai Periyar Government Institute of Technology, Vellore" as their Local Chapter during registration on the SWAYAM portal. This allows the college's Single Point of Contact (SPOC) to monitor assignment progress, track timelines, and facilitate local coordination.
  • Continuous Assessment Support: The campus digital infrastructure and central library facilities are open to students for streaming lectures and submitting weekly assignments.

2. Credit Transfer Process (Anna University Regulations)

In alignment with the Anna University Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) regulations, students can substitute conventional elective courses with NPTEL online certifications.

1Prior Approval
Student obtains HOD & Academic Council clearance before registering (Submission of Prior Permission Form for Credit Transfer Process).

2Course Mapping
A 12-week NPTEL course is mapped to 3 credits PE/OE.

3Examination
Student clears the proctored NPTEL exam with a passing score.
↓
4Apply for Credit Transfer to CAC via SPOC
Students submit the Credit Transfer Form and certificate copy to the SPOC, who consolidates and forwards applications to the Centre for Academic Courses, Anna University, Chennai.

5Official Credit
Upon receiving the official approval copy from Anna University, students can formally drop the corresponding Professional Elective (PE) or Open Elective (OE) course through the TPGIT Exam Cell during the successive semesters of study.

*All credit transfer processes are subject to applicable Regulations and curriculum.

  • Only 3 credits of Professional Electives or Open Electives can be substituted; core curriculum courses cannot be replaced.
  • The mapping of NPTEL marks to Anna University letter grades applies strictly if the student passes the course according to NPTEL's definitive passing criteria.

3. Fee Reimbursement via NPTEL CSR Funds

To ensure financial constraints never hinder academic growth, TPGIT actively leverages the NPTEL Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Funding scheme. This initiative is designed to support deserving candidates from government institutions and Tier-II/Tier-III regions.

Scholarship Criteria

Deserving students can apply for an Exam Fee Waiver (up to 50%) preferably on a merit-cum-means basis. Applications must be submitted through the TPGIT Local Chapter SPOC and carry the Principal's recommendation.

The Passing Incentive

Under the standard CSR fund deployment protocol, eligible candidates initially pay the exam registration fee. Upon successfully passing the proctored examination and obtaining certification, the reimbursement amount is directly credited back to the student's account via NPTEL's partner channels.

4. Free GATE Preparation via NPTEL Portal

Recognizing the high financial barriers of private GATE coaching, our Local Chapter actively promotes the NPTEL-GATE Portal. This official, open-access initiative maps the standard NPTEL repository directly to the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) syllabus, providing top-tier academic resources completely free of charge.
